Symantec’s research shows 40m people install fake security software

SYMANTEC has released findings from its Rogue Security Software report, showing more than 40m people installed fake security applications during July 2008 and June 2009.

According to Symantec, the Rogue Security Software study found cybercriminals are using increasingly persuasive online scare tactics to potential buyers.

Symantec says cybercriminals often place website ads which prey on users’ fears of security threats, urging them to follow links to scan their computer or download software to remove the threat.

The Rogue Security Software report found 93% of software installations for the top 50 security scams were intentionally downloaded by the user.

Symantec claims it has detected more than 250 distinct rogue security software programs since June 2009.

The company says people should invest and install security software from reputable vendors whose products are sold in established retail and online stores.
