Australia-NZ airport biometric program launched

AUSTRALIAN travel will be made easier between Australia and New Zealand with a new biometric program.

A new program developed by the two governments for travelers between the two countries will allow citizens with electronic passports to bypass baggage screening lines.

A user of the program must simply scan their biometric chip embedded in their electronic passport at security kiosks called ‘Smart Gate’ and they will be cleared for passing through immigration control.

Australia already has the kiosks and New Zealand passport holders are able to use them now.

Only New Zealand and Australian passport holders are eligible and they must have one of the new biometric passports, issued since 2005.
